Discover Shozen Bbq

Walking into Shozen Bbq at 9906 Mira Mesa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92131, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that quietly knows what it’s doing. The first time I stopped by after a long workday, the smoky aroma from the grill hit before I even opened the door, and that alone set expectations high. This isn’t a flashy place chasing trends; it’s a diner-style barbecue restaurant that focuses on solid technique, generous portions, and a menu built around comfort and consistency.

From personal experience, the ordering process is straightforward, which I appreciate when I’m hungry. You scan the menu, pick your proteins, sides, and sauces, and within minutes the kitchen gets to work. I once watched the pit master rotate cuts on the grill with the kind of calm confidence that only comes from repetition and training. According to data shared by the National Barbecue Association, maintaining steady grill temperatures between 225°F and 275°F is key for tenderness and flavor, and you can taste that discipline here in every bite.

The menu leans into classic barbecue staples while still offering variety. Think slow-grilled beef, chicken with crisped skin, and ribs that pull clean without falling apart too fast. One regular I chatted with mentioned he comes weekly for the same plate because it never changes, and consistency like that matters. Research from Cornell University’s food service studies shows that repeat customers value reliability more than novelty, especially in casual dining, and Shozen Bbq clearly understands that balance.

What stands out is how the kitchen handles seasoning. Instead of overpowering meat with sauce, they let dry rubs and smoke do most of the work. When sauce is added, it complements rather than masks flavor. During one visit, a staff member explained how they rest the meat after grilling to lock in juices, a method commonly recommended by culinary schools like the Culinary Institute of America. That small step makes a noticeable difference, especially with thicker cuts.

Reviews around Mira Mesa often highlight the same themes I noticed myself: friendly service, fair prices, and food that tastes like it was made by someone who cares. Online feedback frequently includes phrases like authentic flavor, generous portions, and worth the drive, and while reviews can sometimes exaggerate, these feel earned here. I’ve brought friends from different parts of San Diego, and each time the reaction is similar-pleasant surprise followed by plans to return.

Location-wise, being on Mira Mesa Blvd makes it accessible whether you’re local or just passing through the area. Parking is usually manageable, which isn’t always a given in San Diego. The dining room is simple and clean, more diner than destination restaurant, but that fits the vibe. You come here to eat well, not to be distracted by décor.

From a trust standpoint, it’s worth noting that like any barbecue place, wait times can vary during peak hours, and the menu doesn’t try to cater to every dietary preference. If you’re looking for extensive vegetarian options, choices may feel limited. Still, for anyone craving well-executed barbecue with a casual, welcoming feel, Shozen Bbq delivers exactly what it promises: honest food, prepared with care, and served without fuss.

  • Can't beleive I've lived in the area for so long, that I haven't tried this ! Nice comfy atmosphere, and very homey. Initially was going to to the AYCE, but decided to just go side and entrees. Good thing we did! These plates were enormous! Such generous portions! And the food tasted really good! We didn't finish because we had so much food. Our server, I beleive, was one of the owners, and she was a very sweet and attentative, considering it was just her and the chef( possibly her husband). She even packed our food nicely with foil on the inside of our take-out box! Definitely coming back here again to try someone the other stuff on the menu, or even the AYCE. Support this local gem! 21 years in business, and I can see why.

  • Restaurant looks clean. Although Sunday night looks busy with customers at 6pm, we got a table to sit down right away. However, we waited for 15 mins for the server to come over and take our order. This is a family business. Everyone works here is a family member. They were really understaffed during busy hours. We did the all-u-can-eat BBQ for $32. Decent sides and meats. They do give big portions of meat with each order so that we can be left alone for a while. Good to have another choice for AUCE BBQ instead of a major chain restaurant in the area.

  • We planned on going somewhere else for getting Korean Food for dinner but the other please. We had in mind clothes really early so we ended up here. Real good find! Husband and I ordered a lot of food and it was good enough for 2 meals! Really big portion size! Japche - Amazing! The glass was so light and had a good amount of vegetables in there and the flavor was amazing as well. Massive portion size too. Did not seem oily at all and just a good item. Bulgogi - Such a flavorful and tender and perfect beef! They really marinated the meat well. Did not seem like a fatty cut of meat at all. Loved it. Game with rice on the side and a lot of other Korean side dishes which were delicious. The mixed greens, cauliflower and miso soup were mine and husband's favorite! Hot Stone Bibimbap - last minute decision to order this and it was a very good decision. Big bowl of food with amount of vegetables on top and rice on the bottom. Then you mix it all in and eat; The flavors went together so so so so well. The crispy rice on the bottom that stuck to the hot store... BEAUTIFUL Service was also pretty quick and we appreciated that. Food was all hot and steamy but not so hot that it burnt your tongue. Just perfect.

  • It looks like any Korean BBQ restaurant in CA, but once walking in you're warmly greeted by someone who looks like the owner. She was very friendly. Still, the menu looked like any Korean restaurant with a plethora of options from appetizers to stews, meat to sushi. Unexpectedly, the standout dish for me was the yukhoe (beef tartare). It’s definitely different from most places in the best way: instead of being overly sweet or heavy on seasoning, Shozen’s version lets the freshness and natural flavor of the beef shine. The texture is tender and clean, the seasoning is balanced with just the right hint of sesame oil, sesame seeds, pine nuts, chives and egg yolk. Surrounding the main attractive were slices of pear and cucumber. The dish felt thoughtfully composed helping the palate go through an unforgettable culinary experience. The al jjigae (fish egg stew) was excellent as well—deep, rich, and clean with no fishy taste or smell. It’s the kind of stew that’s comforting and layered with so much flavor that you didn't even need rice to complement it. Lastly, the service was outstanding. The owners were incredibly kind and accommodating—warm, attentive, and always smiling. You can feel their pride in what they serve and how they care for their guests. They would come by and ask if everything tasted alright, and made sure we weren't lacking any side dishes. I wish we went for the Korean BBQ, but we were stuffed! Maybe next time. It was definitely a restaurant that I would love to come back to when I visit SD again. A++!

  • Update: I can’t say how much I love here. It feels like in South Korea as the decorations, atmosphere and the owners are all very authentic Korean! The foods here are very delicious. I highly recommend my favorites which are the seafood pancake and cold noodles. Tonight we ordered a new fish to try, the spicy monkfish, it was very yummy. It’s not that spicy but flavor is good. My only wish is I hope here has budae jjigae, which I miss very much. Previous: I love this place!!!! Can't believe why it's only 3.5 stars on Yelp. Probably because it's too authentic for local Americans? Just kidding. But I want to say I love here, I'll definitely come back to try other authentic items. I had Korean spicy cold noodles, it made me think of the noodles I ate growing up in my hometown where is very close to South Korea. My husband had kimchi jjigae. It tastes awesome too. If you love Korean food, you should come here. 5 star from me for sure!!!

  • Great staff. Food was authentic and super tasty. Perfect with soju. I miss it so much after moving to Seattle. Reminded me of when I was back in Korea.

  • This is a family run business and you can tell but I wouldn’t order again sushi from here. Chicken teriyaki and bbq roll meat had a weird taste, I got the rainbow salad and it was not it, avocado and lemon I got were turning brown by the time they were served. The sushi overall was ok but I wish they would have fresher produce I might be back to try the BBQ.
